SHELBYS RAIDERS (CON)
At a time when the Confederacy was begining to loose the war between the states and the army of Robert E Lee had been badly mauled at Gettysburg, the carismatic Colonel Joseph Orville Shelby, with a few hundred handpicked men and a section of light artillery, launched a daring raid deep behind Union lines. Their mission was to cut supply lines, tear up railway track, burn bridges, capture outposts and generaly cause as much disruption as possible. The raiders rode by night and travelled light. For maximum suprise they wore blue Union jackets and black hats with just a sprig of red sumac to identify themselves as rebels. Their favoured weapons were the Colt Navy revolver of which several may be carried and for fighting on foot the Springfield or Enfield rifle, although several different types of rifle were also used. These figures with the usual Dixon head variants faithfully represent some of these raiders. (figures can of course be used as other units of Confederate cavalry).
